Where Zep is the better choice — and it is not close
If a security review is anywhere in your buying path, take Zep. It ships attribute-based access control, retention policies with legal hold, audit trails and provenance, and deployment into your own cloud. It publishes 94.7% on LoCoMo and 90.2% on LongMemEval, with p95 retrieval under 200ms tested from 10K to 100M graphs. Khwan has none of that governance and no published benchmark. This is not a gap we are about to close.
Different problem, not a better version of the same one.
Zep's temporal knowledge graph keeps facts accurate as they change — when a later fact contradicts an earlier one, the earlier one is invalidated. That is fact hygiene, and Zep is genuinely better at it than Khwan is. Khwan works one layer up: it captures the moment a person corrects the agent's behaviour and turns it into a standing rule. Teams with both problems reasonably run both.
The price shape is different because the architecture is.
Zep's paid entry is $125/month on credit metering, where an episode over 350 bytes costs more than one credit — because building the graph is inference, and inference scales with what you send. Khwan meters no model tokens on the read and write paths, because there are none to meter. The one scheduled pass that does run inference cost $0.0094 across 8 brains in a real production run.

Zep's free plan covers two projects and its $125 tier covers five. Khwan's free plan gives four isolated brains. For an agency or a consultancy carrying several clients at once, project isolation is the shape the work already has.
